SUPPORT ALPHA UPSILON CHAPTER

Alpha Upsilon chapter consistently exhibits academic excellence and is successful in retaining a very high percentage of our members throughout all four years at the University of Alabama. However, 5-7% of Alpha Upsilon members work one or more jobs to afford the cost of sorority membership on top of the rising cost of tuition, books and fees.  Scholarships can help ease the financial burden for our sisters by covering some of the costs of education and helping make the Alpha Chi Omega experience affordable and accessible.

The chapter's leaders and a group of motivated alumnae have established a goal to significantly increase the number and amount of scholarships available to support Alpha Upsilon sisters. Each $50,000 in our endowment funds provides an annual scholarship of $2,000. Wouldn't it be amazing to provide that type of financial support to the 5-7% of our sisters who need help to remain active members? It's an aggressive goal, but we envision total endowments of $1.5 million to generate $60,000 per year in scholarships - in perpetuity!

The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation currently has four endowed scholarship funds that benefit Alpha Upsilon members:

  • The chapter has established the Alpha Upsilon Scholarship Fund to provide merit-based scholarships for chapter members. More than $300,000 has been raised for this fund so far. This fund provided 4 scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year and is expected to provide 6 scholarships in the 2023-24 academic year.

  • In 2020, the Jewel Patterson Howard Scholarship Fund was established with a lead gift from the chapter to honor our beloved longtime recruitment advisor. This fund provides merit-based scholarships for chapter members who have specifically contributed to chapter leadership. More than $25,000 has been contributed to this fund by the sisters and friends to honor Jewel's service to the chapter. This fund will award its first scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year.

  • The Caroline Shackelford Fulmer Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 with a gift from Caroline to honor her many years of service on the chapter's advisory board. This merit-based scholarship fund will distribute its first scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year.

  • The Chavez- Currie Family Educational Assistance Fund was established by the family in 2022 to honor five Alpha Chi Omegas in their family through need-based grants to members of Alpha Upsilon chapter.

  • The Marsha King Grady Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 by Past National President and 1984 Alpha Upsilon initiate, Marsha Grady, to provide need-based grants to undergraduate or graduate members of the chapter. This fund will award its 13th scholarship in the 2023-24 academic year.
